Welcome to Part 2 of this 3 part interview with the writers behind The Omniverse Fan Fic Site (2 of our writers, Karl V ( The Triumvirate) and Gordon T. Shuckrow III ( Cloak & Dagger ) weren't available at press time.)
(What is The Omniverse Fan Fic Site: The Omniverse Fan Fic Site revolves around the concept of Merging the DC, Marvel, Wildstorm, Image and Extreme/Awesome Universes into one single, cohesive reality, as well as featuring the Scifiverse Fan Fic imprint, which features a merged Star Trek and Babylon 5 fan fics, with more sci fi merged stories to come later on, and the Omegaverse Imprint, which specializes in more animated style fan fic, like Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Transformers. The cut off point for the site is January 2001. All events happening before December 31st 2000 in the comics is part of continuity and any happening after are not. When it comes to the Scifiverse, those series start from scratch.)
Part 2: Why We Write What We Write
Question 5: What particularly attracted you to work on the title you're working on now?
Michael Sacal (MS): Since I had some cool ideas for them, I decided to write Superman (which will have more of a Lois & Clark kindda feel to it then a Superman feel) and JLA, because these 2 books will star the most powerful heroes in all the universes and I'm a sucker for writing heroes with a real punch, while at the same time exploring their humanity.
Trevor Lee (TL): The F.F. is a title that allows me to get some Grant Morrisonian ideas out of my system. I've always wanted to write comics and this is the closest I could get to doing it.
Bill Kte'pi (BK): The combination of characters representing the unique mystical aspects of each universe -- Magdalena, Doctor Strange, John Constantine ... you'd be hard-pressed to find mystical characters further apart, both in abilities and outlook.
Jason Helf (JH): I'm currently working on a Nightcrawler ongoing, and in a few months I'll be starting an ongoing team book called Demons, also starring Nightcrawler. Both of these books I had planned on posting on the site David and I were going to start, so I've pretty much got things worked out over all. I wanted to write Nightcrawler because I think he's sorely underused and underdeveloped. He starts off as an X-Man, and is then all but faded into the background in Excalibur. I wanted to explore what could be a very deep character. That and his book is filled with a lot of good supporting "second string" characters. Demons focuses on a team of heroes who aren't as easy on the eyes as Superman or Wonder Woman or Captain America. They're the true freaks and I want to try to explain how they deal with not being amongst the "pretty people."
David Grouix (DG): Well I am doing Alpha Flight, or The Flight as they are called. I have always been a fan of the Alpha Flight title. This is my way to put my stamp on these characters and make them an integral part of the continuity of this site as I felt they have always been on the fringe of the Marvel universe and never taken totally serious except by fans of Alpha. Also I will be spinning an X-Men mini which may become ongoing out of The Flight and this is mainly because I am an X Fanatic and love them and no one had really dibbed them yet so I had to take the opportunity.
Gordon Lyons (GL): I've always been a MAJOR fan of what John Ostrander did with Suicide Squad, and figured that I could figure out a way to make it work, and work well, if given a chance. I'm considering this my "trial run", for something I'd like to actually do down the road for DC...
Kris Morris (KM): I really like Spiderman and I've always liked it when he teamed up with other heroes.
Matthew Pierce (MP): I have been a Wildstorm junkie since the debut of WildC.A.T.S. #1. Hands down, my favorite series of all time is Team7 because of its military background and its roster of anti-heroes. Having an eleven year background in the US military I found a connection with the characters of that book that has outlived the company's independence. I aim to bring back much of what was lost when Jim Lee sold out to DC. Barry can have Authority, I'm here to give notice to the world that was there before them.
Matthew E. Rowe (MR): Well, I have been a fan of The Transformers, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, G.I. Joe and the other characters in my Omegaverse since being a kid in the 80's, so I thought it would be fun to write them all in their own little pocket universe.
Daniel Sauve: Authority attracts me for the idea of heroes just /doing/ what needs to be. Planetary I enjoy for the ability to mine comics history and give it that twist that grabs the reader's guts and won't let go.
Question 6: What are your plans for the first 6 months to a year worth of stories for your title (s)?
MS: On Superman I plan to explore the relationship between Lois and Clark from different points of view. First comes the fact that Superman is the only one in the entire book that remembers their existence prior to the Merge ,so that places Clark on a very difficult position. Does he tell his wife that their good friend Peter Parker comes from another dimension or does he let her go on with this false memories? That will kindda bring back the "Clark is keeping a secret from Lois" feel to the book. Will she ever find out?
A running subplot in the book for the first year will be tensions between The US (of which Lex Luthor is President of) and Latveria, Dr. Doom's little European kingdom, which will end with an event running through the sites annuals.
On JLA I plan to explore what it's like to live in a Merged planet and how the sudden influx of villains will keep the Earth's Mightiest Heroes busy.
The title will start with 6 characters, Superman, Wonder Woman, J'onn J'onzz, Captain America, Thor and Iron Man, but in time I plan to add more characters, depending on writers who may want to have their characters as part of the team or characters that may be free that I'd like to write about.
TL: Intrigue, backstabbing, a member leaves, lots of manipulating and it all leads to something REALLY big!
BK: My plots change every time I write an issue :) But in general: an exploration of the odd realms of the new Merged universe.
JH: In the first 6 months (during which I'll only being working on Nightcrawler. I'm planning on making Demons a Year Two debut) I want to develop the cast of Nightcrawler. I want to explore each character so we understand why they do what they do. Splice that with a good bit of Matrix style action, I think I've got some good plans coming.
DG: The Flight is going to show a new branch of the team, known as Beta Black, they are the hardcore heroes that do what they do to get the job done and not worry about looking good in the public eye. James Hudson is going to be redefining his role on the team. And don't expect the line up to stay the same. I am going to weed out some characters, some of the original as well as some of the characters of my own creation that I introduce. X-Men is nothing like anyone will expect, *Merge Spoiler Warning* due to the merge Prof. X mind wiped all memory of the X-Men out of this world so all he knows is there was a team, not only that but Charles has changed. X-Men may not be on the same side of the law they used to be, and with Emma in my books can the Hellfire Club be far behind?
GL: Well, first, I have to re-establish the team, and tweak the concept a little, into more of a "Mission: Impossible meets the Fugitive" kind of thing... after that, it's world travel, and spy intrigue with costumes... if I can pull it off, that is.
KM: Not sure exactly, but I know there will be a new Sinister Six.
MP: The question on everyone's mind, that is familiar with Team7, should be: "Why would Team7 go back to work for Miles Craven?" That answer will take six months to tell. Once the team is reformed it will become clear as to why they were brought together and why they agreed to work for the establishment once more. Of course these men are also pushing 60 so... expect that to be a factor as well. You have to expect new yet familiar faces and the return of a couple old ones. Expect to see Black Ops missions in exotic locations, guns bigger than battleships and enough bloodshed to make the Killing Fields look like a backyard barbecue!
MR: Well, I have very little plotted for TMNT yet, but I can tell you they land in Tromaville, the home of The Toxic Avenger and meet all of Troma's hero's.
For the Transformers, I have a lot of plans. My series starts off right where the 80's cartoon ended... Galvatron is lost in space and Cybertron has entered its golden age once again. I have a lot planned, Death, Destruction, Planetary Domination and more!
DS: Both will be focused on one issue stories. Authority will deal with the fact that they consider themselves as doing what has to be done, and many heroes from the other realities they've merged with won't agree. Not that it matters. In Planetary, more mining of the past-- and there's one story I want to do, about how a previous merge went horridly wrong...
Question 7: Where do you see your title (s) a year from now?
MS: A year from now, in Superman, we'll see Clark face a very difficult decision, as well as having to make some very hard choices that will make people reconsider their opinion about him as well as him reconsidering his status as, what he claims to be, a hero for the entire world, regardless of him living in America.
Over at JLA we'll see many consequences spill out from the event in the annuals, an event that will essentially turn the JLA from heroes into "bad guys", as far a public opinion is concern.
TL: The F.F.'s world will be drastically changed by an event that'll effect the entire Omniverse line. But I can't give away any details.
DG: The Flight will be entering its second year with a slimmed down line up. Other things will be happening that may actually pit these hardened Canadian heroes against American heroes. Brotherhood of X which starts when issue 7 of The Flight comes out will end with its 6 issue, at this point I want to possibly take it monthly, depending on our most gracious editor. This will be an X team unlike any seen before.
BK: Impossible to say -- one of the characters may be dead or otherwise moved on, though.
JH: A year from now, I want to have a good network of relationships between not only the heroes, but the villains in Nightcrawler. I also want to throw in a few frank discussions about some very delicate issues (without being preachy). Demons is more of an adventure book, so I want it to be more of a high adventure story in which readers constantly say to themselves: "What the--?!" Lots of twists, turns, and major climaxes.
GL: Don't know yet... although, I'm leaning toward them actually starting the slow climb to being actual heroes... but who knows. It all depends on where the characters themselves take me. As it is, I've had to completely throw out some plot elements I'd intended to use...
KM: I see Spiderman in different cities and countries.. not just stuck in New York.
MP: On a world tour and under the thumb of a very big presence in the Omniverse. Team7 is a scapel, cold, sharp and objective. But what happens when the team is cut off from any direction or purpose? The government they've become used to is no more and like any piece of old military hardware, they are about to be replaced. The status quo changes for the team and they find themselves desperately fighting on behalf of a man they don't even like!
MR: Well, for Transformers, I can't really say without spoiling almost everything. But I will hint something... the Autobots will be facing their darkest hour.
DS: No one on the teams will be dead. That might seem like an odd promise; most writers would hype a death to high heaven. Instead, I promise you that by the end of the year, the reader will feel something happened. Several big somethings.
